Patrick Demarchelier was born in 1943 and spent his childhood in the historic port town of Le Havre. At 17, his father offered him the gift that would catalyze his future: a camera. In 1963, he moved to Paris where he would embark on a legendary journey in fine art fashion photography. In 1975, Demarchelier decided to stake his claim in New York City, where his talent was immediately coveted by prestigious advertising clients and high fashion magazines such as
Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. Today hundreds of fashion magazine covers and campaigns boast his signature talent thanks to his exclusive contract with Hearst Publications that lasted twelve years until he was enticed with a new and exclusive work relationship with Conde Nast Publications. Among his clients, we find the LVMH Group (Dior, Louis Vuitton, Céline, Tag Heuer…), Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, L’Oréal, Lancôme, Guerlain, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Versace, Giorgio Armani, Gianfranco Ferre, Anne Klein, Valentino, Prada, Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, Salvatore Ferragamo, Donna Karen, Michael Kors, and many others…
He was the first non-British official photographer of the British Royal Family and, over the years, forged a genuine friendship with the Princess. Demarchelier was invited on several occasions to the White House to shoot
portraits of President Regan, President Clinton and the First Ladies of the United States, Laura Bush. He is the author of several album covers for Janet Jackson, Britney Spears, Quincy Jones, Elton John, Billy Joel... and of famous movie posters such as "James Bond: Die another day", "Sex and the City", "Bullworth", "Bugsy", "Dick Tracy", "Mystic Pizza", "Blue Lagoon", and "Coyote Ugly". In 2004, he shot the famous Pirelli's calendar in Rio de Janeiro and he was immediately commissioned to shoot the 2008 edition in Shanghai. The Tony Shafrazi Gallery in New York City hosted his first exhibition in 1996, while simultaneously, his book "Patrick Demarchelier : Photographs" was published. Two years later, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Mexico (MARCO) hosted an exhibition exclusively featuring his photographs. Then, Patrick Demarchelier's second book, "Forms", was published in conjunction with an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in Milan. Also, during the 25th ceremony of the prestigious Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), on June 4 of 2007 in New York City, Patrick Demarchelier received the "Eleanor Lambert Award", as recognition to the excellence of his talent and "his unique contribution to the world of fashion. In 2008, he had an amazing exhibition, a consecration at the Petit Palais Museum in Paris.
